About broadband in New Orleans
After Hurricane Katrina knocked out the local phone network, New Orleans launched a free wireless internet network in late 2005, announced by Mayor Ray Nagin and described as the first owned and run by a major U.S. city, starting in the Central Business District and French Quarter. The city ran it at 512 kbps under its emergency declaration, with speeds set to drop to 128 kbps afterward to comply with a Louisiana law restricting government-owned internet service. The city-owned system was later replaced by an EarthLink-built network, and EarthLink reclassified its municipal Wi-Fi as discontinued operations in 2007.
